1 Making the living economy

Work celebrating and extending the vision and commitments of radical economist, social venturer and humane, inquiring, attentive listener, Robin Murray, who died in 2017.

Back-story . . A reading group around Robin's published work began meeting in 2018 - collective reading was a significant part of his/our activity in the 70s, a very 'Robin' thing to do. At this point \[Oct 2019] this has become a book-making project.

Production was a central orientation in Robin’s practice, and 'formacion' was a significant variant of this - especially in the latter part of his life, with **Synergia**, **Schumacher College** & **the Coop University**. But it's not something he addressed much on the page. This chapter makes an attempt at that.

Goes beyond the analysis of post-Fordist economic forms, in Robin's *Danger & opportunity* (2009), to argue that one of the four economy 'blobs' he identifies - **the mutual sector** - is far more significant than it might seem, when seen as a sphere of *cultural* as well as economic production. It produces *the labour power to remake society*. I argue there needs to be a shift *from economics to organising*.
