Sometimes the metaphorical roots are contradictory between the way different people talk. This is a case where it might be worth calling out the conflict. matrix 
I’m trying to recall one such conflict that manifest in managing work during a reorganization at New Relic. It is vague to me now but it was like team is conveyer belt vs team as relay racers.
Only if we stuck with one or the other vocabulary would heads nod.
