There's a notion in writing called "kill your babies". It's the (painfully true) observation that often the idea or chunk of text you're most fond of is the one you need to get rid of to make the piece work. matrix
It's hard to kill your babies, and knowing that they have been (or can be, via copying and a little rewriting) preserved helps make it easier to discard them. That makes the wiki the equivalent of the big box of old cables in the basement. matrix
