We cannot know exactly when it happened, but some time after the dawn of humankind our hominoid ancestors must have wondered as we do—about the mystery of their inner world. The idea of a Body-Inhabiting Spirit that animates a lifeless form with feeling and cunning, that reveals the myriad elements of the world around, is a strong and recurring theme in Myth.
