Alienation describes a state of unrelatedness in which the subject and the world are inwardly disconnected, indifferent or even hostile to each other.
This mode of relatedness already contains the germ of a relationship of aggression – a relationship of Aggression, of course, that made the spectacular successes of science, technology and the development of prosperity possible in the first place.
According to Hartmut Rosa's reading, the cultural achievement of modernity consists precisely in the fact that it has almost perfected the human ability to put the world at a distance and within manipulative reach. This form of distancing–aggressive world relationship seems to him indispensable; the ability to do so is presumably anthropologically inherent, it is one of the prerequisites of the "eccentrically positioned" human being, who is able and compelled to distance itself from itself and its world relationship, to view itself, as it were, from the Outside.
