Luhmann referred to his Antinet as a Zettelkasten, which in American English means Notebox, and in European English translates to Slip Box. Throughout the rest of this book, I’ll use the terms Antinet, Zettelkasten, analog Zettelkasten, and Luhmann’s notebox, interchangeably. And for any grammarians out there: I use the German singular form of Zettelkasten as both singular and plural in English, rather than trying to work in the German plural form of Zettelkästen. The Chicago Manual of Style, on which this book’s format relies, dictates one should not pluralize foreign words as though they were English. – Scheper, Antinet Zettelkasten, xiv.
