Traditional concepts of "media competence" ("Medienkompetenz") are inadequate for the AI era. They are subject-centered and based on a dichotomy between an individual and a tool. This perspective fails to capture the new forms of subjectivation and the entangled, sociotechnical networks (like distributed interpretation) in which researchers and AI co-produce knowledge.
