When we started doing data mining, we were concerned that we were generating too many rules,
but the companies we worked with said, “this is great, this is what exactly what we want!” The
prevailing mode of decision making was that somebody would make a hypothesis, test if the
hypothesis was correct, and repeat the process. Once they had data mining tools, the decision-
making process changed. Now they could use a data mining algorithm to generate all rules, and
