Stairs that ascend and descend at the same time. Birds that turn into fish and back into birds. Maurits Cornelis Escher's wonderfully illogical drawings still fascinate young people in particular today. The documentary provides insight into the fascinating confusion of one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

Staircases that ascend and descend at the same time. Figures that turn into 2D stencils to become plastic again. Paradoxical landscapes and surreal city scenes. Metamorphoses in which birds transform into fish and back into birds - M. C. Escher's work fascinates millions of fans. The Dutch graphic artist (1898-1972) continues to inspire filmmakers, painters and musicians alike. The documentary "M.C. Escher - Journey to Infinity" lets him speak for himself through letters, diary entries, notes and lectures and provides insight into the fascinating confusion of one of the most important artists of the 20th century. Escher commented astutely on the turbulent world around him, but focused entirely on his art. After a long period in which he created mainly traditional works, he made his breakthrough after World War II with his signature "Escher prints." In these works, Escher shows a world that seems logical at first glance, but then turns out to be completely impossible in reality. In the film, 3D animations show how Escher gave shape to ideas in his prints and how his thought and work process gradually developed. His works are immediately recognizable. Where he drew his inspiration from, how he lived, who the ingenious graphic artist was who worked obsessively and ultimately amazed the world, the film tells. But it was probably Escher himself who was most amazed by his great success, especially among the young. Documentary by Robin Lutz (NL 2018, 58 min)
