Function Theory grew hand-in-hand with calculus several hundreds of years ago, while becoming dependent upon the concept of Continuity. Relational Theory grew with computational databases less that fifty years ago within a discrete digital context. Generally, functions are the domain of mathematics while relations are the domain of computer science.
