The concepts of interpenetration and Structural Coupling explain the relationship between systems that are internally determined by their own operations and structures. These systems are in each other’s environment and irritate each other, without having access to each other’s operations.

A slinky is a children’s toy that resembles a coiled spring. It’s tightly wound but can loosely expand when gently stretched, returning to its perfect state when released – it can also become a tangled, distorted mess when stretched too far. A slinky is often used as a metaphor, providing a tangible perspective for workplaces, communities, and life in general.

In computing and systems design a loosely coupled system is one in which each of its components has, or makes use of, little or no knowledge of the definitions of other separate components. Sub-areas include the coupling of classes, interfaces, data, and services - wikipedia
