The Curiosity and Powerful Learning school improvement framework suggests schools _Adopt Consistent Learning Protocols_ as one of the four Theories of Action for the Whole School. It states, “WHEN we adopt consistent learning protocols in all classes, THEN all students will experience an enhanced capacity to learn, and to develop skills, confidence, and curiosity. We believe that when learning strategies, and their purposes, are clear and accessible to all our students, they are better positioned to become powerful learners.”
In 2016, Griffin’s foundation year, the first draft of the Griffin State School _Learner Tools_ was created. They were prompted by the Learner Protocols Theory of Action and inspired by the seven character competencies (7C’s) Guy Claxton outlines in his book, _Educating Ruby_. As 'cherry-pickers', we blended Claxton’s description of the 7 C’s with Kath Murdoch’s Learning Assets in creating our Learner Tools.
Confidence, Collaboration, Communication, Curiosity, Creativity, Commitment and Craftsmanship are the key attributes we are working to foster in our learners at Griffin. These are the ‘tools’ they will need to be successful in their future lives, in school and beyond. Curiosity was purposefully centred, as we believe it is the linchpin for all the others.
The word ‘tools’ was important to us, as we felt it defined the importance and purpose of these skills in deep learning. Within the seven compartments of the Griffin ‘tool kit’, are multiple, specific skills. Each tool is outlined in detail and with associated elaborations in our Learning Manifesto.
As aspiring inquiry teachers, the staff at Griffin place great emphasis on HOW learning is taking place alongside the WHAT or content of the learning, consciously engaging our learners in inquiring into the skills that support them to learn effectively. We aspire to use the Split Screen Approach to Learning Intentions, and explicitly work with our learners to develop their character competencies. We use a shared language to articulate what and how they are learning and teach them to speak Learnish in this process.
At Griffin, learners are supported to 'sharpen their tools' for learning daily.
