It's amazing how many things get lost. Reading about Smalltalk in Expanding the Role of Tools blew my mind. Most everything I have wanted to add to programming, and writing environments was already in SmallTalk.
I find myself today looking to add graphing, relationship and dependency mapping to a literate wiki, and it was all there over 30 years ago.
