Ward Cunningham (@WardCunningham) We've allowed wiki to be configured many different ways. We thought this would be helping but maybe not so much. We'll talk about this in the dev/user video chat starting in 15 min. https://zoom.us/j/818108478

# Discussion Reprised
I stopped by 30 minutes after and found the discussion well underway.
A good deal of discussion about Wikipedia and the Tragedy of the Commons. How Microsoft after Ballmer is now contributing patents to a commons sharing patents with Linux [perhaps indicates Microsoft's future directions].
This brought up reflections attitudes changing toward making contributions toward commons vs the rights of protecting IP. Wikipedia opened the doors to new thinking and also draws attention to broad differences in exampled by the continents. US/EU/China
Some neat ideas were discussed, I did not catch them all.

It’s a way to break the manuscript into cards, and be able to have a more fine-grained discussion about components of the manuscript From Pete Forsyth to Everyone: (10:43 AM) Wikipedians like to say "Wikipedia can't work in theory, it only works in practice." I think that 10 years ago this was a cute anecdote, but as time goes on, it becomes embarassing. Why are we not updating the theory to match and explain reality? Isn't that how science is supposed to work? From Robert Sterbal to Everyone: (10:43 AM) Did they have to sue themselves to enforce their patents? From Pete Forsyth to Everyone: (10:43 AM) Robert: haha :) From Robert Sterbal to Everyone: (10:46 AM) The smart phone broke it From Robert Sterbal to Everyone: (10:46 AM) Microsoft makes its 60000 patents open source to help Linux https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/10/17959978/microsoft-makes-its-60000-patents-open-source-to-help-linux From Paul to Everyone: (10:47 AM) https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/10/10/microsoft_open_innovation_network/ From Robert Sterbal to Everyone: (10:50 AM) I might get a usable file system out of this! From Pete Forsyth to Everyone: (11:02 AM) "Necessary but not sufficient" is exactly what I'm going for as a starting point -- "necessary AND sufficient" would be a great next step! From Pete Forsyth to Everyone: (11:03 AM) Who was it that was just talking about Elinor Ostrom? I'd love to follow up, I wasn't able to hear well enough to fully follow the story. From Robert Sterbal to Everyone: (11:03 AM) We actually need that code at work From duke to Everyone: (11:04 AM) Bernard Lietaer From David Bovill to Everyone: (11:04 AM) Elinor Ostrom’s work is well documented on Wikipedia, for a good start - including the conditions for well governed commons. From Robert Sterbal to Everyone: (11:04 AM) Not true of several decibillionaires. From Pete Forsyth to Everyone: (11:05 AM) She won the Nobel Prize the week I went to Indiana (her university) to talk professors into making Wikipedia writing assigniments part of their classes I enjoyed reading about her work, but of course did not have a chance to talk to her! From Robert Sterbal to Everyone: (11:08 AM) We don't have the ability to delete certain objects in our database as part of our debt From Pete Forsyth to Everyone: (11:10 AM) Who in this group brought up Elinor Ostrom? I believe it was the person on the right in the group of 3 that are together in person?
