Cognitive classifications fulfill behaviorally relevant functions such as the derivation of an individual's properties from category memberships. Accordingly, the formation of categories is subject to certain regularities and, in the case of natural (object) categories, is related to structurings in the perceived world (cf. e.g., Berlin & Kay, 1969; Rosch & Mervis, 1975).
