Illusion of Control

The Illusion of Control is the human tendency to believe that we can control certain processes, but which demonstrably cannot be influenced. Ellen Langer (1982) showed that people often act as if random events can be manipulated. Brains have evolved over the course of evolution to want to discover meaning in the world by constantly searching for causality, i.e., people are naturally inclined to interpret everything as if it were predetermined and all things must always happen for a reason.
