# The Structures of Divinatory Memory

Recognizing the presence of Mystery means constantly dealing with a chronic Lack of Knowledge. What is known stands out against the background of unknown and unknowable facts, which are assumed to be the essential ones – this does not change even with an increase in knowledge. Nevertheless, one cannot avoid making decisions (Entscheidungen) according to a criterion that is beyond arbitrariness (Willkür) (both as far as future decisions are concerned and from the point of view of other observers). The structures of divinatory memory serve precisely to deal with this problem. It is about the right decision criteria in the face of an insurmountable lack of knowledge.
